Shelter

Children / Youth

• Gift cards
  Children of all ages stay in the shelter but we rarely receive items suitable for pre-teens and teens, especially boys.
  
  Gift certificates provide flexibility so that every child receives a gift that would be age, gender and interest appropriate – the right size winter coat or boots; a mystery, adventure or fantasy story book; a music CD of lullabies or rock ‘n roll; swimming lessons or an afternoon at the movies.
  
  In every case, a gift card ensures a child’s need is being met and a guaranteed smile on the child’s face. Gift cards also enable us to buy much-needed items to be used in our children’s programs.
  
  We would love gift certificates for:
  • Electronic stores (e.g. Future Shop)
  • Movie rentals
  • Movie theatres
  • Youth Clothing Stores (e.g. Urban Planet, Wal-Mart, Winners, Zellers, etc)
  • Sports stores
  • Bookstores
  • Music Stores
  • Lessons (e.g. swimming, music, skating, etc)
  • Gym Passes (e.g. ACTS, Access, etc)

Women
• Gift cards
  Every woman who uses our service has a unique need. Many women live on tight budgets and have little to spend when emergencies arise or on anything over and above the basics for themselves or their children. Gift cards can help them fix their car, go for coffee with a friend or buy their child a birthday present. In all cases, gift cards ensure that every woman can get exactly what she needs during her time with us.
  
  We would love gift cards for:
  
  • Long distance calling cards ($5 or $10 denominations if possible)
  • Hardware stores (e.g. Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, Home Depot, etc)
  • Grocery Stores
  • Hair Cuts
  • Books
  • Restaurants/Fast Food
  • Coffee Shops (e.g. Second Cup, Tim Hortons, Williams Coffee Pub, etc)
  • Department/Retail Stores (e.g. Winners, Wal-Mart, Zellers, etc)
  • Gas
  • Pharmacies (e.g. Shoppers Drug Mart, etc)
  • Transportation (Bus tickets & Taxi rides locally. Bus, Train or Airplane tickets to help women visit or return to family or friends.)
  • Automotive Service Centres (to help with car repairs or maintenance)
  • Cleaning Services (to help prepare a house to sell, or before they move in)
  • Child Care
  • Storage Units
  • Basic Home Repair/Lock Changing services
  • Gym Passes (e.g. ACTS, Access, etc)

We also need general items for our clients such as the following:
• NEW hair brushes
• Woman's pajamas
• Non-perishable food
• Sports balls – basketball, soccer ball, baseball etc.
• New infant toys (e.g. Exersaucer, floor toys, etc)
• Rubber sole slippers for women and children

Quite often, women will come through our agency in a crisis situation. They aren’t always prepared to take the steps they have taken and may need items to get them through the next few hours like food or toiletries. When situations like this arise, it is often necessary to provide these women with the appropriate resources to help them get by. Gift cards for the following stores are incredibly helpful:

• Drug stores
• Grocery stores
• Gas
• Clothing stores
• Shoe stores

Violence Prevention

Our Violence Prevention Programs are funded strictly through fundraising dollars. These incredibly popular and successful programs get children and youth involved in activities in their classrooms and the shelter that help them develop healthy relationships and deal with the impact of violence in their home, school and personal relationships. Several items are needed to help maintain the success of these programs.

• NUT FREE candy
• A 12.8 to 14.8 cubic foot chest freezer

• support one of our fundraising events by sponsoring, donating prizes or purchasing tickets.
• hold your own fundraising event or draw with proceeds directed to Family Transition Place.
• drop off your good used clothing to "As We Grow" and ask that it be put under Family Transition Place's name or our consignment number 3763 for the benefit of the women and children at the Shelter.
• donate your HBC reward points to Family Transition Place using the HBC Rewards Community Public ID # 6890147.
