Grade 5-6 Student Experience When the male students were asked if it was acceptable for boys to cry, a brave young man put up his hand and shared that he cried all day when his parents separated. He then started to cry. There were a few snickers from the other boys in the room. Just as the facilitator was about to address the situation a young girl spoke up. She appeared to be a very popular student and looked right at the young man who was crying as she said: “You know us girls aren’t very impressed by those guys who try and act tough and macho. We really prefer guys who aren’t afraid to show that they have feelings.” He smiled as he dried his tears. Afterwards the Violence Prevention Educators thanked both the female student who supported the boy and the boy himself. The boy said as he left “I sure feel a lot better now.”
Grade 5-6 Teacher Testimonial “Great presentation! Very fun and interactive. I could tell the students really enjoyed it and I would most definitely recommend it to another teacher and school.”
Grade 7-8 Student Experience When asked what one can do if they are in an unhealthy relationship, a girl put up her hand and asked, “What if it is an adult who is bullying you?” She disclosed that her father was pressuring her to see him even though there was a court issued “no contact order”. FTP’s Violence Prevention Educators spoke to her after class and connected her to the school’s Child & Youth Worker. Due to her disclosure, FTP and the school were able to ensure her safety.
Grade 7-8 Teacher Testimonial “Extremely knowledgeable, great game plan, very appropriate. Wish we had more time, I think every school must have this presentation.” “Facilitators had great volume of voice, knowledge on subject, and responded to negative comments in a very positive and thoughtful way. The presentation had a great flow with powerful videos that made kids think!”
Grade 9-10 Student Experience During a presentation to an all female health class, one student disclosed to the male Violence Prevention Educator that she had been sexually assaulted during the summer. He was the first person she had told. Immediate support was offered to the student and a connection was made with the school’s Child and Youth Worker. As a result the student was able to talk to her parents and get the additional support she needed to deal with the trauma stemming from this event.
Grade 9-10 Teacher Testimonials “The game style with video clips inserted was captivating and even held a 4th period class on Friday with a substitute teacher!” “I've seen this presentation evolve over the past 2 years. I'm very impressed with the variety. It's very relevant to what the students are doing through in their lives.” “I have many presenters come to my class and when I asked my class which presenter was their favourite, FTP overwhelmingly took the vote.”
